"Vista Grande"

The owner of a vacant hillside lot overlooking Twentynine Palms in the southern California desert has been scribbling notes and ideas on napkins for years.  The only definite decision he had been able to make was giving the property a name, "Vista Grande" or grand view.  After 10 years of napkin notes, he asked for my help, and the project came alive.

Vista Grande means Grand View. Nearly 180 degree panoramic view from the site, looking North over the beautiful valley below.

After several revisions, this has become the predominant working design concept for Vista Grande
How does one combine a list of over 60 needs and desires for a property in a remote and distant, desert locale... that might also need to be flexible enough in order serve as host to the owner's primary residence, rental income property, mother-in-law flat, or as a group weekend retreat that could focus on either Yoga, Yoda, or Yogi?

  • group retreat locale and required resources
  • rental (w/ own access)
  • limit southern sun

Technical Drawings (part of a complete set) that help define the project

A partial model of the home, built to highlight the showcase feature, the grand views of "Vista Grande" toward the valley beyond, was constructed and the panorama photograph was edited to fill the windows in order to suggest how the final outcome might appear.

After many years, this project is still ongoing...  moving forward, VERY SLOWLY, but with huge passion to do it correctly, with the right motivation and inspiration.

After all, it needs to be GRANDE!
