JUNGLE SAFARI
A relatively new tradition in Portland is the Sunday Parkways events put on the City in various neighborhoods throughout the Summer. For the Kenton event, a kids activity was born.
On Jun 27th, 2010, we assembled a "Where's Waldo"-type event called "Jungle Safari" where various, custom-designed "safari" animals were placed along the main stretch of the Kenton Neighborhood's portion of the North Portland Sunday Parkways event.

In an age of digital games that offer hundreds of different media activities for kids, it takes a lot of creative imagination and the combination of three classic "old school" activities to engage and entertain families in new ways. Or at least, that's what inspired me to create this activity, the Jungle Safari, for kids and families.
For this activity, perfect for neighborhood events, block parties, or kid-friendly promotional events, a designated area (such as a neighborhood block, corner of a park or very, very large backyard) becomes the Safari Animal Reserve. Kids checkin at the Ranger Station and receive a checklist of animals that may be hiding in the grass, bushes, trees, or perhaps in windows. Actual natural habitats are most likely where each animal may be hiding, but several animals seem to have a whimsical sense of humor and attitude about their hiding places.
